I am rereading Twilight, possibly out of self-hatred but ostensibly because I want to make sure that my Zombie Anti-Twilight story fully opposes it in every respect.
It’s mind numbing; I am reading it in bed at night only… to help me fall asleep.
What’s bothering me the most this time around are Edward’s looks. Bella, who forgets to breathe and doesn’t notice when she has come inside out of the rain, seems able to interpret the most complex facial expressions.
Like in the second chapter, when Edward looks at her with “unmet expectation” on his face.
Tell, me, WHAT DOES THAT LOOK LIKE?
I keep twisting my face around trying to create this painfully specific expression, and I end up feeling like Joey Tribbiani doing his “I have a fish hook in my eyebrow and I like it” look.
And then, a couple chapters later, Edward looks at her incredulously, but his face is also “hard” and “defensive” at the same time.
I’ve been working on it. What do you think?
Heh. π
oh wow, you actually sound just like my daughter when she goes on Twilight rants π You write so well that I have now started to look back in your blogs and found earlier comparisons between HP series & Twilight, again excellent writing.
I’m fascinated, you mention that you write fanfic, do you publish it somewhere, my daughter also writes a lot of fanfic and has been taking part in NaNoWriMo successfully for the last 4 or 5 years, bad mother, not sure exactly how many books she’s written! Do you take part in this? I really hope you & my daughter are in the same circles online, although I suspect the fanfic world is bigger than the real one, so it may be unlikely.
Thank you for the laughs
No, I don’t write fanfic. While I can understand why people do, I prefer to work in my own worlds rather than with those of existing authors. My NaNoWriMo book is an original work of fiction, in which all of the characters are the exact opposite of what annoys me in Twilight :p
I’m so glad you’ve been enjoying my blog, and tell your daughter to keep it up!
Thanks, will do, her NaNoWriMo books are all original, but I know she does fanfic too. where can I read some of your own work?
On this blog only, I’m afraid. I don’t publish my fiction online lest it get stolen :p but I’ll let you know when it’s ready for publication – I could send you an advance copy maybe!
OMG, yes, yes, yes I would love to read your book, thanks xx
Be warned – even if it gets to a publishable state, it is an angry book full of swears and science :p
I hope this means there will be another installment or two of “(insert any other work of fiction) v. Twilight”.
No, but I am planning on doing a fifty shades of grey critique!
Oh, that’ll be something to look forward to π π π
oh yes, my daughter hates that too for all the obvious reasons π
Your daughter has good taste!
JOEY!
Someone needs to gif that.
Twilight has the strange ability to get worse with time…
Nailed it!
Love it! The post and the pics. π
LOL!! Amazing how I managed to read the entire Twilight series twice and failed to even pick up on that … but then again, I tend to create my own characters when I read a book and they usually don’t look anything like what’s described! It’s often happened that I’ve been picturing a brunette (for example) and get totally thrown by the author mentioning her blond hair! I then try to imagine her as described only to realise I’ve gone back to my original look a few pages on. π
That happens to me all the time :p one of the many reasons why too much description on the part of an author isn’t good. You need to let the reader fill in the blanks as necessary. I always have trouble picturing Edward as a redhead.
