Is there a particular book or DVD of signs you recommend? When did you start using them with Owl? He’s really inspiriting, and I want to start them with etc as soon as I can.
It is hardly a necessity, though, since there are a million resources on line to help you find signs for your baby.
They say that you CAN start signing from birth onwards, but that babies don’t usually pick up on it until they’re ready to start on language, so you may end up signing for many months. If you wait until the baby shows signs of readiness (pointing, holding up objects for you to name, etc) then they pick up on it quite fast.
I have found teaching signs to be the same as teaching things like waving “bye bye”. I* make the sign in context and encourage him to try. At first he would have to see a sign several times before he attempted it, but now he’ll attempt new ones right away, and he remembers them next time.
ok lady – film him doing “Tiger” – we showed him a pic on the computer and taught it to him at Chinese New Years (he was born in year of the tiger btw) that night he looked at us like crazy people and kept signing “again”. But on wed he did it perfectly, even included a “rawr” for added effect!
That’s awesome! I suck at working on this with Jonah. He has “more” and “please” down, but only in context of certain activities, not in general. Thankfully, his verbal communication has improved a lot.
it just might not be his interest at the moment. Owl is really spurring a lot of this himself – he goes through books and points at everything, demanding to know the word and sign. Sometimes we have to flip through one of my adult sign books or go on the internet to learn a new sign just so he’ll stop asking.
My daycare lady is so impressed and tells everyone how hard I have worked on it, but that makes me feel like a fake!
Oh, is there anything as cute as that little piping voice saying “da?” I love signing. It was so helpful when little dude acquired receptive language way before expressive speech.
Wow, watching this makes me really wish we’d kept up with the signing with nanny-bebe. He can do more and all done, and recognizes drink…but i wish we’d done more. he gets so frustrated now that he can *almost* talk but is not quite there, but yet he wants WHAT HE WANTS when he WANTS IT and if you can’t figure out what he wants? SCREAMING. *sigh*

The only book I’ve really used has been the original Baby Signs book (written by the researchers who claim to have pioneered the process), which a friend picked up for me, I think from a used book store:

Friends of mine who do signing with their kids used “signing time” videos on youtube.
He’s awesome! I love the ginormous sponge brains they’ve got!
Greyson was just the same, Violette on the other hand… well, she’s a second child:)
I know, I’m constantly amazed at how quickly he absorbs things!

Excellent!
Yes, he’s a Metal Tiger, apparently. Sounds like a rock band!
Not just any rock band, but like a hair metal band from the eighties. Awesome!
