Okay, I know you are all waiting for the labour story, but instead I’m going to inflict you with some serious TMI, because I really need input from people who have Been There.
Is it normal to be bleeding from your urethra as well as from your vulva?? Is it possible for blood from the vulva to somehow travel upwards and forwards to just make it LOOK like your painful urethra is bleeding?
One thing I do remember is that the lochia is incredibly heavy at first and gets everywhere, so it’s possible it just looks as though your urethra is bleeding – but I would still get it checked out. If you had a catheter during labour maybe it has something to do with that? Anyway, hope all is well with you x
I agree with kenanddot, but also remember the catheter they inserted and the not so normal way it came out (sorry if I’m ruining the surprise for anyone…). You may have some slight trauma there that, with the ever changing pH of your urine with hormone fluctuations, etc., is taking some time to heal.
PS – see a doctor about it anyway – also possible you’ve got a bladder infection.
Oooo, I don’t remember that happening… When is your follow-up appointment? With midwifery care here in Ontario we get home visits the day after birth, then on days three, five and seven. I’m not sure how it works with OB care. But I’d say if you’re waiting till the six week check-up, I would go get checked out sooner if I were you. At least call your public health nurse and see what they say. (You get that free phone service in BC, right? It’s 811 here.)
Oh, and are you using the peri bottle with warm water every time you pee? That helps a lot with pain (and cleanliness). Witch hazel on pads helps, too, as do frozen pads — wet (with water or witch hazel), then freeze in a bowl (so they have a curved shape to better fit your body), then sit on it with a towel underneath for the thawed liquid. Messy, but really great for swelling.
i agree with the previous posts, it’s probably from the catheter, if you had one… if you didn’t then it might just be from trauma to the bladder during labor… either way you should get checked out, it’s a dirty world down there and the last thing you want is a major infection! my cousin got an infection from an allergy to the stitches in her vag, and she had to stop mursing because of the insane antibiotics they put her on.
Thanks folks, I did have a catheter, and it, er, may have caused some extra trauma so I’m a little worried. I may take Kerry’s advice and call either 811 orthe public health nurse… I have a doctor’s appointment next Monday, too.
I was too ripped to shreds and/or swollen to have the guts to actually look… So, no help here. =P (I hope everything is ok!!)
I know what you mean! I have been putting off putting polysporin cream down there because I was afraid to know the extent of the damage. Bit the bullet last night, but smeared largely and didn’t explore too much…
Sounds like everyone else has good advice. I didn’t look for about a month! I started to grab a quick peek about a week later and then got scared and decided against it!
