In an anniversary card from my Father-In-Law (which, by the way, was actually a birthday card that had been altered in the salient places with white-out and a ballpoint pen):
“…I don’t get excited about anniversaries until they hit the ten year mark…. but I am cautiously optimistic that you two will continue to work hard to be caring to each other, and kind to the world.”
Uh… Thanks?
My own parents, by contrast, sent us a touchingly sweet card and two hundred and fifty dollars in cheque form (“since the first anniversary is usually paper…”)
Perfect Husband, to me:
“…Want to trade parents?”
Uh…at least he remembered? I’ve never been sure what the etiquette is for recognizing other people’s anniversaries. Are cards or presents required for married couple you know every year for as long as they remain married? Only those close to you? Only those who’s wedding you attended/were in? Only certain years? I only have the vague sense that the answer lies somewhere between the examples set by each of your parents.
Ouch.
Yeah, I don’t think you have to get couples gifts unless it’s an important number and you’re invited.
It’s the “cautiously optimistic” that particularly amused me.
Most lukewarm encouragement evar :p
My FIL got us an anniversary present one year – hardboard placemats decorated with pictures of “wacky” cartoon cats. And matching coasters.
There are several things wrong with this.
When I took them back to the store to exchange them for a picture I hated less, I was shocked to find out that he’d spent well over $100 on ugly, useless things that I never use, and have to find storage space for.
I was all (in my head, anyway) “why couldn’t you just have given me the MONEY????”
I think anniversaries are for the couple only, anyway – I don’t see the need for anyone outside the relationship to mark it, unless it’s a milestone and accompanied by a party.
Wow… that’s… really special!
Oh my. FIL fail. This is the same FIL who gave the embarassing speach at your wedding? Sounds like quite the character.
That’s him! I have to say, as a FIL he amuses me quite a lot.
